in his eyes she was perfect, and she did not feel at all afraid

he told her he could do mental arithmetic, as far as fractions, and that he knew the number of square miles and the number of inhabitants in the country

她总是微笑着，所以他觉得自己知道的还不够多，她带着他在一片乌云上越飞越高，同时环顾着广袤的大地，而风暴呼啸着，仿佛在唱着古老的歌谣。

and she always smiled so that he thought he did not know enough yet, and she looked round the vast expanse as she flew higher and higher with him upon a black cloud, while the storm blew and howled as if it were singing old songs

他们飞过森林和湖泊，飞过海洋和陆地；

they flew over woods and lakes, over sea and land;

在他们下方狂风呼啸；

below them roared the wild wind;

狼群嗥叫，雪吱吱作响；

the wolves howled and the snow crackled;

黑色的乌鸦在他们头顶尖叫着飞过，而在一切之上，月亮明亮而皎洁地照耀着 —— 就这样凯度过了漫长的冬夜，白天他就睡在白雪皇后的脚边。

over them flew the black screaming crows, and above all shone the moon, clear and bright, — and so kay passed through the long winter’s night, and by day he slept at the feet of the snow queen

third story

会魔法的女人的花园

the flower garden of the woman who could conjure

但是在凯离开期间小格尔达过得怎么样呢？

but how fared little gerda during kay’s absence

他出了什么事，没有人知道，也没有人能提供哪怕一丁点儿消息，除了那些男孩，他们说他把自己的雪橇系在另一辆很大的雪橇后面，那辆雪橇穿过街道，出了城门。

what had bee of him, no one knew, nor could any one give the slightest information, excepting the boys, who said that he had tied his sledge to another very large one, which had driven through the street, and out at the town gate

没有人知道它去了哪里；

nobody knew where it went;

许多人为他落泪，小格尔达长时间悲痛地哭泣。

many tears were shed for him, and little gerda wept bitterly for a long time

她说她知道他一定是死了；

she said she knew he must be dead;

他是在学校附近流过的河里淹死的。

that he was drowned in the river which flowed close by the school

哦，那些漫长的冬日确实非常沉闷。

oh, indeed those long winter days were very dreary

但最后春天带着温暖的阳光来了。

but at last spring came, with warm sunshine

“凯死了，走了。” 小格尔达说。

“kay is dead and gone,” said little gerda

“我不相信。” 阳光说。

“i don’t believe it,” said the sunshine

“他死了，走了。” 她对麻雀说。

“he is dead and gone,” she said to the sparrows

“我们不相信。” 它们回答道；

“we don’t believe it,” they replied;

最后小格尔达自己也开始怀疑了。

and at last little gerda began to doubt it herself

“我要穿上我的新红鞋，” 一天早晨她说，“凯还从未见过的那双，然后我要到河边去打听他的消息。”

“i will put on my new red shoes,” she said one morning, “those that kay has never seen, and then i will go down to the river, and ask for him”

当她亲吻还在熟睡的老祖母时，时间还很早；

it was quite early when she kissed her old grandmother, who was still asleep;

然后她穿上红鞋，独自一人走出城门向河边走去。

then she put on her red shoes, and went quite alone out of the town gates toward the river

“你真的把我的小伙伴从我身边带走了吗？”

“is it true that you have taken my little playmate away from me”

她对河流说。
